God creates the world and humanity, then sends a flood as judgment for sin. Part One ends with an explanation of the structure of the Old Testament canon.


The Patriarchs   Part Two: The Patriarchs
God establishes a covenant with Abraham and demonstrates his faithfulness to him and his descendants.


Moses and The Exodus   Part Three: Moses and The Exodus
The Israelites are forced into slavery, then led out of Egypt by Moses, who later receives the Law from God.


Joshua and Judges   Part Four: Joshua and Judges
After Moses’ successor Joshua leads the Israelites into the Promised Land, a series of judges rule Israel.


Kings and Prophets   Part Five: Kings and Prophets
The Israelites demand for a king lands them first Saul, then David, under whom Israel thrives culturally and militarily. Later, the nation divides into two kingdoms, setting the stage for its takeover by the Assyrians and, subsequently, the Babylonians, who drive the Israelites into exile.


The Exile and Return   Part Six: The Exile and Return
Life in exile tests the faith of the Israelites, many of whom return to Jerusalem after their release, rebuilding the temple and the city wall. The Overview concludes with the prophet of God foretelling the coming of the Lord’s messenger, bringing salvation and judgment.
