The Ministry of Work - Doing Excellent Work as Worship
You can work for God in the job you already have.
You don’t need to have an official title of “minister,” “pastor,” or “missionary.” You also don’t need to work for a church, a Christian non-profit, or a missions organization to qualify.
The truth is that you already work for God—you just might not realize it.
God Has a Job for You
From Scripture, we know that God is always at work.
In the beginning, God spent six days working—creating and forming the universe (Genesis 1:1). Jesus’ three years of ministry were filled with hard work, so much so that sometimes he and the disciples didn’t even have time to eat (Mark 6:31). The Holy Spirit is constantly at work, reminding us of everything Jesus taught (John 14:26).
God is present at our workplaces and he’s getting work done. But do we see the ways he’s working? Do we hear his invitation to work with him?
How often do we ask ourselves:
- What is God’s invitation for me today in my job?
- How would God have me respond to this coworker?
- How can I serve my team, my company, my organization?
- Where is God inviting me to take initiative?
- How can I reveal Jesus to my coworkers today?
The Ministry of Vocation
Jesus did invite specific disciples (fishermen) to quit their jobs in order to join the work he was calling them to do. So God might be inviting some of you to go into full-time vocational ministry. But maybe God is inviting others of you to leave ministry and find a job in the secular workplace. Maybe God is calling you to go back to school. Or to move to a new city.
God might also be inviting you to stay where you are. Maybe he is calling you to be part of a culture change at your workplace by:
- befriending someone you don’t know very well
- organizing fun social events after work or on the weekends
- starting a rec sports team with some of your coworkers
- becoming a person of hospitality or generosity in your workplace
- starting a spiritual discussion or Bible study with a coworker who is curious about Jesus
Sent as Witnesses to Our Workplaces
We all have the opportunity to emulate Jesus in our workplaces. We all are invited into deeper discipleship as we work alongside God and for God in our jobs. We all have the opportunity to serve God to the best of our ability, wherever we are.
InterVarsity alumni in every field of work are being used by God in amazing ways to bring change to their offices and communities. For example, teachers Randy and Meg Palisoc founded a charter school as a way to help “eliminate the achievement gap that has persisted for generations among educationally disadvantaged students.” Rapper Andy Mineo works to “foster a safe marketplace where ideas about God, faith, religion, and its implications can be discussed and considered.” Will Haughey and his brother are using their business skills to improve the lives of a Honduran community. Sandra Yu works for Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice (DWEJ), whose mission is to make Detroit a healthier and more environmentally friendly place to live.
