Haiti Spring Break Trip (UW Social Work)
Mar 27, 2010 - Apr 3, 2010
This project is restricted to UW Social Work students.
Site and people: Haiti is a small country of 8.3 million people on the island of Hispanola. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere where most of the population lives in extreme poverty. The climate is tropical, and over half the population practices Voodoo in some form. The languages of Haiti are French and Haitian Creole, though most of the population speaks only Creole. We will learn simple Creole phrases to assist us in communicating well. French is spoken in schools and government. There is currently a United Nations presence in Haiti with roughly 8,000 troops around the country for peacekeeping purposes.
Program: We will seek to love the Haitian people and learn through a week of practical ministry during our time in Bon Repos, Haiti (northeast of the capital, Port-au-Prince). We will serve alongside Tom Osbeck and Jesus in Haiti Ministries, which has been in Haiti since 1998. Their website is Jesus in Haiti .
Ministry:
Goals: Our hope during this time is to
- Enter into a different culture with the hope of learning & sharing more of Jesus’ love, grace, & truth through relationships with our new friends.
- Gain God's perspective on justice.
- Be a blessing through prayer, word, & deed to the Haitian people & country.
- Bring our enlarged heart for the world back to our campuses and incorporate these changes into our studies and long-term discipleship.
Orientation and re-entry: Team prayer, preparation, & training will occur 2-3 times prior to the trip. You'll receive information about this upon registration & as time approaches.
