A Story of a Hindu Student in the USA Who Became a Christian

Here is the story of a Hindu student became a Christian while studying for a masters degree in the United States. I am recounting his story briefly here as I remember it.

He was befriended by two Christian men shortly after arriving at his campus in Atlanta, GA where he worked on his his undergraduate degree. They befriended and witnessed to him about the love of Jesus Christ for all people of every culture.

The more they witnessed to him, the more he resisted and was very frank with them about his rejections of Christianity. Nevertheless, they persisted in their friendship and witness with him during those YEARS of undergraduate study until he graduated.

Later he moved to Athens, OH where he pursued a masters degree. While there he began reading the New Testament, privately and completely on his own, (with no one knowing about it), because his interest in Jesus had been stimulated by his two Christian friends in Atlanta.

He finally came to believe in Jesus simply by reading the gospel accounts of Jesus life, death and resurrection from the dead. At one point knelt by his bedside and accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior.

He decided then make a trip back to Atlanta, not having seen his friends there for almost two years. They were shocked and amazed that he'd become a Christian, and they confessed to him that they had "given up" believing he would ever turn to Christ.

When I heard him give this testimony, he was in Minneapolis, MN and had switched academically to working on a PhD in "Communications Media" at the University of Minnesota, because, as he said, "he wanted to return to India and find ways to influence mass media there to communicate the gospel of Christ to his people!"

He said, "Do not be disheartened when Hindu students reject your witness to the living Christ. All the time that I was resisting the gospel outwardly with my two Christian friends I was, as you say 'watching them like a hawk,' and inwardly testing them to see if what they said matched the way they lived...and it did! That was the reason I started reading the New Testament later and searching for Christ."

"My Christian brothers and sisters," he said, "never take the outward appearance as the total reality of what God may be doing in a Hindu's life when you are witnessing to them."

This came as a vital insight and encouragement to me in my witness among internationals, who often appeared not to be responding to my witness to Christ.

We simply do not know what GOD the HOLY SPIRIT may be doing within a person's life! We may never know until we reach heaven and all is revealed, or we may be privileged, like the two in Atlanta, to see some of the results of our witness. In either case, God is glorified through our faithfulness! Ned Hale, Staff, InterVarsity-USA
