Good Cross-Cultural Publications
Recent email exchanges on a network of workers among international students in North America has yielded some interesting recommendations of publications in the area of cross-cultural learning. For example:
One worker among international students says she "has found Figuring Foreigners Out by Craig Storti (Intercultural Press) very useful in training. I dislike the title, but the cultural difference continuums and critical incidents are excellent for training. A staff member on our team got permission to make transparencies of some of them for a fee.
She continues, "Another book that has proved helpful in training is A Beginner's Guide to Crossing Cultures by Patty Lane (Inter Varsity Press, USA). Many of the insights in this book are quite useful especially in training beginners. There are a some exercises at the end with permission to copy already granted."
Another worker recommends Cross-cultural Connections by Duane Elmer, (Inter Varsity Press USA).
Turning Bricks into Jade, Brislin et al.,
(Intercultural Press) is an excellent collection of cross-cultural misunderstandings about Chinese culture
with multiple-choice answers and feedback for each
answer.
Cross-cultural Interactions, a practical guide,
by Kushner, Brislin, et al, (Intercultural Press) uses the
same format but covers various cultures. Overall Intercultural Press has excellent secular materials and is often used in academic settings and by professional cross-cultural trainers.
