An Answer to Prayer

The InterVarsity students at the University of Evansville (UE) in southern Indiana held a coffee house on campus as a way to introduce other students to Jesus. A musical group played softly as people sat around tables, drinking coffee and talking. Esther, the InterVarsity staff member at UE, talked with Stacey, one of the many students who stopped by. As they talked, they found out that they both grew up in the same town. In fact, Stacey knew one of Esther’s sisters, Salome, from high school.

The next time Esther went home, she told Salome about meeting Stacey. “Esther”, Salome exclaimed, “do you know that Stacey is the person that you and I prayed for seven years ago? We prayed that she would come to know Jesus.” Esther had forgotten, but God had not.

Seven years previous, God knew how he was going to answer that prayer and that Esther was going to be part of that answer. As Esther thought about the seven years between the prayer and the answer, she was amazed at God’s faithfulness.

The InterVarsity chapter has learned the same lesson. While they had been praying that people in the theater department would come to Christ, God brought Stacey, a theater department student, to their fellowship.

These days, Stacey and Esther regularly study the Bible together. Since God answered the previous prayers, bringing Stacey to InterVarsity, Esther is confident that he will answer the prayer that she has asked many people to pray, that Stacey will become a Christian.
