Ben’s Story

Ben, a freshman at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California attended InterVarsity’s Disciples on Campus conference in Reno, Nevada, the weekend of February 4-6, 2005. During the conference Ben was challenged to become serious about following Jesus. Just as Jesus told the Apostle Peter, “Follow me and I will make you a fisher of men” (Mark 1:17), Ben heard the speaker ask, “Will you become a fisher of people for the kingdom of God?”

Ben listened. He was determined to be obedient in following Jesus and be a fisher of people for Him. He was excited to tell people about God’s love.

God gave Ben an opportunity to be obedient and share the Gospel even before he returned to campus. About half way between Reno and Stockton, Ben’s car needed to be towed. He was unable to find an available tow truck in the immediate area, but after calling around, a tow truck driver was willing to come from about thirty miles away. Ben rode in the cab with the driver the hundred miles to Stockton.

“So what were you doing in Reno?’ the driver asked.

“I was at a student conference,” said Ben

“That’s cool,” said the driver.

“We learned about God’s love.”

“Sounds like a good conference,” the driver said.

“It really made me think about how I spend my time and what’s important to me,” Ben told him.

“That’s really interesting,” the driver said.

“I want God to be number one in my life,” Ben replied.

“You won’t believe this,” said the driver. “but I’ve been thinking a lot about God and the meaning of life lately.”

Ben introduced the driver to Jesus. During the hour-and-a-half ride, Ben and the driver talked about God, His love and His ability to completely meet the needs of those who trust in Him. At the end of the trip, Ben gave the driver a Bible and a phone number so they could continue the conversation.

God brought a tow truck driver from thirty miles away, so that Ben could share the Good News of God’s love.
