Experiencing Community

“The study of Mark’s gospel changed my life,” Jill, a senior resident advisor at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, said.

“As I entered college, I had almost no understanding of Jesus. My life goal was to be a rich mechanical engineer, but among my new friends a few were involved in InterVarsity. They continually invited me to Bible study and I continually made up excuses about why I could not attend. The Mark study intrigued me, though in an academic sense, so I joined. But my curiosity was bursting as I explored Jesus and faith. Soon, I no longer wanted to be rich, but to change the world. Community service became a large part of my life, and I began asking questions about Christianity.

I accepted Jesus and his invitation to follow him, and my life continues to change. Junior year, I decided to facilitate a Bible study and help others come to know Jesus. At the end of my junior year, I changed my major to sociology, because I love people and serving them. This past summer, I spent six weeks in north Philadelphia, living and working among the urban poor. I’ve learned how to share my resources for the sake of the kingdom,” Jill said.

Jill hopes to volunteer on campus with InterVarsity next year, discipling younger students as they deepen their relationships with Jesus. Her desire is that the campus community at Lehigh University would fully experience the riches of God’s kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ.
