The Baptist Church, which is next door to our college, approached us with an idea for outreach at our campus. They suggested that we set up a prayer and pop booth during finals week at the end of the semester. They graciously donated pop and a popcorn machine and helped us staff the booth.
Students randomly stopped by our booth during the first two days of finals week and received a free can of pop and a freshly popped bag of popcorn. We gave them the opportunity to fill out a personal prayer request and place it in a special box at the booth or have someone pray for them right at the booth. Most students wanted prayer for their final tests, but several personal needs were mentioned, too.
Students were also asked to fill out a survey, requesting information regarding their year in school, age, gender, if they currently attended a church, and if they’d like more information about IVCF or wanted someone to contact them. Someone later contacted those students who indicated that they wanted further information or personal contact.
We feel that this venture was a success. The survey gave us information about the general population of the college and students’ perception of IVCF and openness to hearing about God. We are eager to try it again.
