Having a Gig at a Community College Campus
Encouraging witnessing stories from a graduate student on a community college campus |
Sacramento City College (CA) is a beautiful campus full of ethnic diversity. My staff partner, Kyle, and I spend one day a week at “Sac City” leading a small group for Christians and Bible studies for non-believers that we call Groups Investigating God (GIGs).
During lunch one afternoon I met Steve, a freshman. We talked briefly about our lives and discovered that we have similar ethnic backgrounds that stem from China. He asked me about my position with I-V because he couldn’t understand why a graduate from college would be spending his afternoon at a community college!
I told him about my involvement with IVCF and that I was in the process of starting a Christian fellowship on his campus. I asked Steve if he was familiar with the story of Jesus. He shared that his brother had read parts of the Bible, but he personally knew little about Jesus. He then gave me permission to share an outline of the gospel story. There was a moment in our discussion when I had him read a few verses from the Bible. I was ready to take my Bible from Steve but he said to me, “Aaron, I want to read this again.” It was exciting to see Steve’s desire to discover God’s love for him in the Bible. I look forward to spending more time with Steve on campus.
A few months after my first encounter with Steve, Kyle and I set up an information table during a club day on campus. An international student from Korea, “Nicole,” came up to our table and introduced herself. Nicole shared with us that she was looking for a Christian group on campus to study the Bible with because of her desire to become a Christian! Two weeks later Kyle and another student, Dennis, had a GIG with Nicole at the home of her host parents. After studying Scripture that same evening, Nicole decided to follow Jesus!
—In addition to his I-V staff work at Sacramento City College (CA), Aaron Wun is also I-V campus staff for Sacramento State College (CA). When he isn’t meeting with students, he enjoys watching baseball, playing “Hand and Foot” (a card game), and spending time with his wife, Kimberley, who is also on I-V staff.
