Awareness/Recognition
1. Read books and watch videos from suggested lists on pp. 30-32.
2. Take a class on power and privilege, or racism, or ethnic minority studies.
3. Participate in a summer missions project or urban project that particularly explores issues of poverty, racism and justice.
Listening/Immersion
1. Attend Black History Month events on campus, or other heritage celebrations. Learn about racial profiling and red-lining.
2. Regularly attend a club on campus or a church that is traditionally ethnic specific and different from your own.
3. Consider living in a racially mixed neighborhood or in the city after graduation.
Risk and Relationship
1. Put yourself in places that would open opportunities of friendship with those of another culture or ethnicity.
2. Spend substantial time with your friend on their turf and with their family.
Risk and Structures
1. Search the Scriptures to learn about unjust or hurtful structures. (See Acts 6, 10; Leviticus 25; the Sermon on the Mount; Amos, Habakkuk and other minor prophets. For more ideas see Yoder’s Shalom . . . , referenced in the main article and The Word in Life Bible.)
2. Write letters to the editor of your college paper speaking out about injustices in your community or campus. Have your I-V chapter regularly help out at a rescue mission or shelter; ask your staff for more ideas. Participate in a Global Urban Trek or an Urban Project.
3. Move to and serve an underserved community; set-up business opportunities in an economically depressed area; use your money to make micro-loans to individuals and businesses in the developing world.
