Now that you’re in college, what do you do on Halloween? You could hand out candy, take your younger siblings trick-or-treating, dress up and scare the little neighborhood kids, OR you could be like the R.O.C.S (Really Outrageous Christian Students) of Cal State Bakersfield! Last Halloween our Bakersfield I-V chapter went Trick-or-Feeding.
What is Trick-or-Feeding? Trick-or-Feeding is like trick-or-treating in that you go door to door in costume on Halloween night, but instead of asking for candy, you ask for canned food donations. Our reasons for Trick-or-Feeding were twofold. We wanted to serve the homeless in our community in a practical way, and we wanted to serve God and shine his light on a night known for its darkness (see 1 John 1:5). Our Monday night Bible study put much thought into planning and organizing the Trick-or-Feeding event. First we invited all the small groups in the Bakersfield I-V chapter. Each group was to come dressed up according to a theme of their choice; prizes were awarded for best overall costume and best group theme. Next the groups were assigned neighborhoods and signs and fliers were handed out. The signs and fliers were made in order to let the residents know who we were and what we were doing. (This was necessary because a big group of crazy college students would surely frighten residents if they came to the door on Halloween!)
Then each group went to its designated area of town and had three hours to collect as many canned goods as possible. When all the groups had returned, we counted the cans and gave a prize to the group who had collected the most. The next day we delivered over 500 cans of food to the local rescue mission! |
