The Epic of Gilgamesh is an ancient Mesopotamian, well, epic that is fairly well known to many students of the Bible. It’s one of the oldest works of literature and contains some dramatic themes that parallel a few Bible stories in Genesis. The Epic of Gilgamesh is also the name of a movie that portends to explore some of the oldest dramatic themes in literature. Terry Mattingly’s recent column (first column for March at www.tmatt.net) seems to imply that it will be released soon but Epic’s Facebook page indicates the movie won’t be out until sometime next year.
Movies provide a great vehicle for college students and others to talk about epic themes and the meaning of life, and what God has to say in the Bible about stuff that’s happening in our lives right now. So if The Epic of Gilgamesh isn’t quite ready for release, there are other movies coming out with interesting religious angles, as Tim Drake reported recently in the National Catholic Register.
What movie have you seen recently that provoked a discussion on biblical themes?
