InterVarsity’s Graduate & Faculty Ministries (GFM) seeks an Area Director to plant and develop ministry serving graduate students and faculty in Washington, DC and Maryland. The DC/Maryland area includes 10 Research 1 and Research 2 Universities, with particular strength in educating students in political science, public policy, law, public health, medicine, global studies, and international affairs. There are a significant number of international students in this area, as well as a number of HBCU’s (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), including the renowned Howard University. These universities are educating and preparing people who will become world-changers in their respective fields. Through witness, prayer, and discipleship, InterVarsity is seeking to develop grad students and faculty who will become world-changing disciples of Jesus who walk in the way of the cross.
The current team of 6 GFM staff and volunteers serve 8 chapters (PhD, Healthcare, Faculty, International Students, etc.) at Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, George Washington University, University of MD-College Park, and American University. There is significant opportunity to plant new ministry and expand witness among grad students and faculty in DC and Maryland.
The ideal candidate will be a growing disciple of Jesus Christ with a heart to see the people, ideas, and structures of the university transformed by the gospel. This candidate should also be someone who has previous supervisory experience, can build and lead healthy teams, has strong cultural competency and people skills, and enjoys working with a diverse and committed group of staff and volunteers. This person must be prayerful and able to clearly articulate a vision for planting and growing witnessing communities of graduate students and faculty which draws in ministry partners, potential GFM staff, and missional students and faculty leaders. Theological education and/or advanced degrees are considered an asset.
The GFM Area Director will provide leadership to plant ministry on new campuses and develop the ministry on existing campuses, advancing InterVarsity’s mission through clear goals and objectives. This GFM Area Director will hire, supervise, and develop campus ministry staff and volunteers. This AD will regularly gather the team, create and implement Area-wide programs, and raise personal and ministry funds.
