Assistant Cook/Chef

To advance the purpose of InterVarsity, this position will contribute to an overall excellent camping experience by ensuring the planning, preparation and serving of healthy and appealing meals and snacks to camp guests.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Personal

  • Be a maturing disciple of Jesus Christ: growing in love for God, God's Word, God's people of every ethnicity and culture, and God's purposes in the world

Prepare appealing on-time nutritious meals:

  • Help plan and adjust menus, as necessary
  • Assist with aspects of food-related needs for guest groups
  • Assist with cooking and serving responsibilities

Maintain a clean and efficient kitchen and dining hall:

  • Provide a comfortable and clean kitchen and dining hall
  • Meet health department standards
  • Ensure adequate food, supplies, and appropriate storage

Supervise summer crew and volunteers:

  • Assist with the training and development of summer crew and volunteers in appropriate kitchen policies, procedures and practices

Contribute to the effectiveness of the team:

  • Work in collaboration and partnership with other members of the camp’s staff and leadership, including working as needed on special projects

Assist in ministry to summer crew and interns:

  • Supervise and mentor and evaluate crew as assigned
  • Be available to mentor and disciple other crew as opportunities arise

Develop a fundraising base:

  • Develop a team for personal prayer and financial support
  • Raise an agreed-upon amount of personal financial support
  • Nurture a team of people who will pray for and financially support the camp
  • Manage staff to help them achieve their fund development goals

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Annually affirm InterVarsity's Statement of Faith
  • College degree or equivalent experience
  • Previous cooking experience for large groups desired
  • Food and hospitality background preferred
  • Flexibility to work irregular and extended hours as required
  • Ability to work in a multigenerational and multicultural environment
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to work in a diverse team environment
  • Management skills and experience
  • Ability to work well with others both staff, guests and volunteers
  • Ability to supervise, train and develop staff and volunteers
  • Working knowledge of industrial kitchen equipment
  • Ability to prioritize and work on multiple objectives
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must have a Food Safety Certificate (willing to provide education to become certified.)
  • Computer skills required
  • InterVarsity background or equivalent ministry experience preferred
  • Ability to work in cooperation with camp leadership team members to accomplish overall goals
  • Good interpersonal skills and communication skills
