God is changing hearts and lives in colleges across the country through InterVarsity

At InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA, our vision is to see students and faculty transformed, campuses renewed and world changers developed.

Our campus staff ministers have a passion to minister to students on every corner of every campus. They are developing future world changers with Kingdom vision and Christ-like character through time-tested programs and Bible studies.

Teach students to respond

to God’s Word

Our mission is to renew the campus. We develop disciples and leaders who grow in love for God, God’s Word, God’s people of every ethnicity and culture and God’s purposes in the world and we accomplish our mission in these ways:

Establishing and Advancing Witnessing Communities on Campus

Encourage service to God’s purposes in the world

– Tim Holmes

“InterVarsity was the place where I learned to live for Jesus with abandonment. I learned that everything in my life belongs to Jesus, and I saw people modeling that in a way that I not only admired but I also learned from.”

“I knew I wanted to be a part of a Christian community but I didn’t know what InterVarsity was. [After joining] it was becoming a distraction from school because it was so much fun and way more exciting

than class!”

Draw people to Jesus

as Savior and Lord

“I realized there was more to following Jesus than going to church. I was challenged to not just think about missions in a one-dimensional way, but to love the poor and people on the margins, and give my life to the mission of God.”

Engage people of all cultures

and ethnicities

“God really used InterVarsity to challenge me and take my faith to the next level, and to show me how to do ministry in a secular environment. I think I ended up learning more than if I’d gone to a Bible school.”

– Benita Ki

A History of Changing the World One Heart at a Time

Our movement started at the University of Cambridge, England, in 1877. A group of Christian students began meeting together to pray, study the Bible, and reach out to their friends. Eventually, they formed the British Inter-Varsity. (Hence our name, ‘“inter,’” meaning “between," and ‘“varsity," the British term for college -level students.)

Here are a few milestones from our history:

  • In 1928, British Inter-Varsity sent Howard Guinness to Canada to start up and assist evangelical student groups.
  • In 1938, the the first U.S. InterVarsity chapter formed at the University of Michigan (with help from Inter-Varsity Canada—thanks, friends!)
  • InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA was officially established on November 14, 1941.
  • In 1946, the first triennial Urbana Student Missions Conference was held in Toronto, which would grow into the longest-running conference of its kind.
  • In 1947, InterVarsity/USA became a founding member of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students and officially launched InterVarsity Press
  • In 1969, the national office moved from Chicago to Madison, Wisconsin.
  • Alec Hill became president in 2001, sparking a new season of growth and renewed focus on evangelism.
  • In 2015, InterVarsity hosted our 24th Urbana, marking over 300,000 participants who have been challenged to serve in global missions over the decades.
  • In 2016, Tom Lin became president.
  • Our 75th campus year, 2016-2017, was our most fruitful, with more decisions for Christ than ever before and a presence on a record 687 campuses with 1,015 chapters.

Promoting Responsible Stewardship of God’s Gifts and Grace

For six consecutive years InterVarsity has been awarded 4 stars (in a 4-star rating system) by Charity Navigator, a nonprofit rating organization. This rating recognizes InterVarsity's strong fiscal management and is based on InterVarsity's program stability and low fundraising expenses.

"Only 4 percent of the charities we evaluate have received at least six consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA outperforms most other charities in America", said Michael Thatcher, President of Charity Navigator.

InterVarsity pledges financial accountability through out charter membership in the Evangelical Council for Financil Accountability (ECFA). The ECFA seal assures donors that their gifts will always be used appropriately for InterVarsity's ministry.
