A Praying Community

Steve Wong, InterVarsity staff at the University of California-Davis, felt God leading him to incorporate more prayer into the Large Group Fellowship meetings on campus. His conviction deepened when Hubert, a student leader in the Fellowship, told him, “My housemates and I think God is telling us there needs to be more prayer within the Fellowship.”

Hubert and his friends decided to revitalize Noon Prayer, a campus tradition where students gather on campus every school day to pray for the needs of their campus and the world.

Seven students have attended the prayer session every day, while other students attended as their schedules allowed. Students are listening to God, responding to His will, and mobilizing the prayer movement throughout campus. Many Freshman students are getting involved in Noon Prayer.

During the Large Group Fellowship meetings, students have been experimenting with different styles of prayer. Recently, they scattered newspaper clippings about various world issues throughout the room. Students grouped together to pray for world leaders and current events. At each meeting, the students pray for and support each other as they bring individual needs to the group.

Students are developing a better understanding of the character of God as they worship Him in song and prayer. The room seems more solemn as students seem to be realizing God’s presence for the first time. Many students are finding their large group experiences more satisfying as they lift one another’s burdens to God in prayer.

After participating in the group Prayer at a Fellowship meeting, some of the student leaders felt God calling them to lead a group of students dedicated to prayer for the needs of the world and the campus community during the upcoming school year. The group will study the Bible together to pursue a deeper understanding of the meaning, power, and significance of prayer in their lives. The group will lead the daily Noon Prayer meetings as they pray for growth and unity within the InterVarsity community.

Through prayer, students have felt God lift the barriers that exist between InterVarsity students to allow them to develop a deeper sense of community with each other. Through praying together for the concerns of their world and each other, InterVarsity students have become more aware of applying their Christian values to current events worldwide. They are discovering the value and power of prayer as God leads them to turn to prayer as the first resort rather than their last as they seek Him.
