Serious Times author named President of Gordon-Conwell Seminary

WESTMONT, IL—InterVarsity Press author Dr. James Emery White has been appointed president of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary as well as professor of Theology and Culture, both effective July 1, 2006.

“I am delighted at being selected president,” White said. “Gordon-Conwell is one the leading evangelical seminaries in the world, with a rich history and an international reputation of rigorous academic standards in classical theological education. I look forward to building on this foundation of academic excellence as we prepare men and women for the new challenges of ministry to the local church in the twenty-first century.”

White is the founding and senior pastor of Mecklenburg Community Church, founder of Serious Times (SeriousTimes.com) and an adjunct professor of Christian theology, culture and apologetics at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He holds M..Div. and Ph.D. degrees in theology, history and biblical studies. White has also done advanced graduate study at Vanderbilt University, and continuing studies at Oxford University. White is the author of ten books, including four from InterVarsity: Embracing the Mysterious God, Serious Times, The Prayer God Longs For and the forthcoming The Mind God Longs For (Summer 2006).

White will succeed Dr. Walter C. Kaiser, Jr., who will retire on June 30 after nearly nine years as president of Gordon-Conwell. Kaiser is Colman M. Mockler Distinguished Professor of Old Testament, and for many years served as professor of Old Testament and as dean and vice president for education at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Deerfield, Illinois). A frequent speaker at churches, camps and conferences, he has written numerous books, including two titles with InterVarsity Press: Old Testament Documents and Hard Sayings of the Bible (with Peter H. Davids, F.F. Bruce and Manfred T. Brauch).
