Applying core principles in evangelism

This generation of students has been described in a variety of ways. Biblically illiterate. Technologically literate. Relativistic. Postmodern.
As InterVarsity staff around the country interact with students, they continue to adjust their ministry to reach new generations of students. Today’s students need hands-on experience to perceive the relevance of the Gospel.
The first step in leading students toward Christ is to build a trusting relationship with them. Most non-Christians approach believers with an attitude of distrust, so creating a genuine friendship is crucial to breaking down barriers.
Despite their skepticism toward Christianity, many non-Christians students are open to participating in an investigative Bible study, or going to an event – especially if it’s oriented toward a social justice issue, such as AIDS. In 2006-2007, InterVarsity chapters hosted 2,341 evangelistic outreach events that drew thousands of students to hear the Gospel.
Many InterVarsity chapters have invited non-Christian students to participate in their chapter activities. As non-Christians experience the warm community of Christians, they are often drawn in deeper. As a result, 30% of the students involved in InterVarsity chapters are self-professed non-Christians.
As these students grow in their knowledge of God’s Word and experience God’s love from their fellow students, the hearts of many change, and they make life-long commitments to Christ.
