Commencement is Just the Beginning

Since it comes at the end of the collegiate experience, most of us have to remind ourselves why graduation is called “commencement.” For InterVarsity students it signals the end of ever-present friends, close community, exciting fellowship and a vibrant discipleship that impacts the entire campus. But it is also a beginning. Helping our newest alumni adjust to new roles in their community, church, vocation and family is part of the contextualized faith InterVarsity works so intently to communicate to students.

The unique relationships and experiences of college life become history when students leave campus and join more than 87,000 known InterVarsity alumni. The life and career, for which college was preparation, begins. In our vision of transforming students and faculty, renewing campuses and developing world changers, InterVarsity develops life-long disciples who will use the tools of faith to continue to grow spiritually and share their faith with those they meet in their new careers and post-college relationships.

The InterVarsity Alumni Department and local campus staff, representing over 800 chapters, work to stay in touch with former InterVarsity students and provide information and services to strengthen their walk in the Lordship of Christ. Through newsletters, reunions, emails, weekend conferences, prayer letters, and picnics, our alumni remain connected to InterVarsity’s ministry on campus and with each other. The titles and resources of InterVarsity Press remain a strong aid in teaching and study. Alumni are able to enjoy a one-time 50% discount and 30% thereafter on all IVP titles.

Alumni stay connected by volunteering and financially giving to support InterVarsity’s ministry. This year alumni are also invited to fully participate in Urbana 06. Receptions, dinners and special activities are planned just for them, and they are offered a $50 discount on registration. (Details on discounts at www.intervarsity.org/get-involved/alumni)

When our students step off the commencement platform with their degree in hand, it doesn’t mean the end of their relationship with InterVarsity. It means the beginning of a new role as an alumnus and a new context in which to live the life of a disciple of our Lord.
