The Wedge of Truth

Phillip Johnson is a prominent legal scholar having taught for thirty years at the University of California at Berkeley. He is not anti-science. In fact, he readily acknowledges that we may learn a great deal from science. But he says that science does not offer unlimited knowledge. Science cannot offer an explanation for the ultimate purposes and meaning of life. To understand the limitations of science and lay the groundwork for a new understanding of knowledge, Johnson proposes a fundamental change in ones thinking habits and worldview.

In The Wedge of Truth, Johnson explores fundamental questions. What is reason? What counts as knowledge? He then argues that scientific naturalism must answer the question, Can natural law and chance create genetic information? Johnson claims that Darwinian evolution cannot account for the existence of the information necessary for the development of the complexity of life?

In light of this argument, Johnson explores current controversies such as the original Kansas State Board of Education ruling that placed restrictions on the teaching of evolution. He also addresses the arguments against intelligent design offered by several prominent authors.
