Study to Show Thyself Approved

Stan Parker, the InterVarsity staff member at Michigan State University, Ann Arbor, spoke to the Large Group meeting of the Just for Jesus chapter of the fellowship there. He challenged the students to be more faithful in academics by understanding some biblical interpretive principals for studying Scripture and applying these principles to their fields of study. II Timothy 2:15 states, “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” He explained that there were three applications that could be made from this passage: obtain knowledge, strive to understand what you know, and apply the wisdom you gain in your studies.

A few weeks later, many students came back to the group and told how their study habits were improving. Many had adopted a more positive point of view for handling difficult subjects and no longer settled for mediocrity in class. By studying for Jesus’ sake, rather than for the sake of their parents or professors or other people, the students are now glorifying Christ.

An unexpected benefit has come from the students’ commitment to apply II Timothy 2:15 to their studies. The transformation has been noticed by roommates and other friends who are opening up to discuss the gospel. Two InterVarsity students reported that their roommates are now going to church. This experience has confirmed for many in the chapter that faith and academics can co-exist and benefit their personal lives, as well as the Kingdom of God.
