Where’s the Party?

At the University of Nevada-Reno, students who were curious about Christianity attended The Point, a high energy, fast-paced meeting designed to be an entry point to the Gospel for students who were hesitant to visit a church or participate in a Bible study.

Around 400 students—almost half non-Christians—came to hear Mac Smith, InterVarsity staff, speak of the miracle at Cana, where Jesus turned the water into wine. Some students think of Jesus as the ultimate party killer, the last person you would want around to have a good time. In the story about the wedding feast at Cana, Jesus is not only invited to the party, but saves the bride, groom, and the entire party from humiliation.

During the event, Mac shared that the same thing happens when Jesus comes into our lives. Many people think that becoming a Christian involves strict rules, giving up good times, and the end of the party. Mac shared how our lives truly begin when we accept Christ. Many students responded to the message that Jesus is the life they are looking for at the party. Most of the students stayed for a dance party held after The Point.

Twenty students asked to have coffee with Mac after the event to talk more about what God may have to do with their lives. Since The Point, fifteen students at the University of Nevada-Reno have begun attending GIGs (Groups Investigating God) Bible studies for non-Christians. One of the non-Christian students accepted Christ during an InterVarsity conference the weekend after the event.

Across the country, InterVarsity staff and students want to share how the Gospel is relevant to students’ lives. They encourage non-Christians in their campus communities to investigate Christianity.
