Who Jesus Is

Sixteen students at Carroll College in Waukesha, WI, met to discuss who Jesus is and study the Gospel of John together during a GIG (Group Investigating God) Bible study for non-Christians. One student has struggled with his role as a Christian in a pluralistic society and how the Gospel of Christ fits into that society. He has faithfully attended the study throughout the semester. He now believes in Jesus because of what he learned about who Jesus is.

For the Christian students who participated, this study clarified who Jesus is. Throughout the Gospel of John, Jesus shows love, grace, and compassion to many people. Jesus’ example showed students the importance of loving and accepting others. The students saw how they could share the love, grace, and truth of Christ with all students within their campus community.

Another student firmly believed at the beginning of the semester that a relationship with Jesus was not the way to God. He continued to study passages in the Gospel of John and invited Jesus into his life. As did a third who was confused about who Jesus is after reading the popular book The Da Vinci Code. The Bible study helped him clarify the identity of Christ.

“I think the study helped to clear up confusion and a lot of people realized why they are Christians, giving them a reason and foundation for their beliefs,” said Matt, one of the leaders.

Andrew, a senior, and Matt, a junior, provided each GIG member with a journal. They also prepared questions for each meeting and homework to encourage discussion. The questions and journals helped make the GIG personal for the students, while also providing great discussion points. Andrew and Matt committed to spend an hour outside their preparation time to pray for the group members.

InterVarsity students across the country share the hope they have in Jesus Christ as they encourage their friends to study Scripture and discover who Jesus is.
