Before You Walk
If you’d like to take notes throughout this session, make sure to download and/or print the PDF journal before you head out. The beginning walk will define what is meant by the Harmony Way and show what it looks like to live in Harmony with God.
Welcome to Via Divina: Harmony Way. If you’ve participated in past walks, these audio guides will be familiar. If you are new to Via Divina, we want to set the stage well for you to walk with your head, heart, and body ready to be present to God.
Each walk begins with a reading from scripture or some music. We invite you to use this time to quiet yourself as you begin walking in your neighborhood, campus, or local nature path.
Along the way you will hear readings from scripture using the First Nations Version (FNV). The FNV is a dynamic equivalence translation that captures the simplicity, clarity, and beauty of Native storytellers in English while remaining faithful to the original language of the New Testament. The names you will hear for the Triune God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - are often different from what we are used to hearing, yet they refer to the same God revealed in the pages of Scripture: Father(Creator, Great Spirit, Grandfather); Jesus (Creator Sets Free); Holy Spirit (Holy Spirit).
In addition to the scripture readings and stories from Indigenous followers of Jesus, each walk includes practices that engage your whole person – heart, mind, and body – to become present to God.
Blessings on your journey.
The Walk
Visio Divina
Visio divina — divine seeing — is an ancient prayer practice inviting us to use our eyes to lead us in contemplation about God and enter into prayer with him. Visio divina invites us to engage with God using our minds, our imaginations, and our hearts. Many of us “live in our heads,” so it’s helpful to be led into exercises which engage all of who we are.

This work is part of an installation called Altars of Reconciliation. These pieces express diverse, individual faith experiences of three Southeastern Native artists who practice Christianity. Each “altar” depicts ongoing personal reconciliation between the artist and God, with awareness of the complex history of Christianity among Southeastern tribes and the mystery of faith that transcends it.
