A Brief Guide for Discernment

A day on campus can be filled with difficult decisions. In the moments when we are pressed to find an answer, it is easy to forget that God is with us and invites us to share our dilemmas with him. This guide will walk you through two movements – one through a contemplative reading of Scripture called Lectio Divina, and the other is a prayer of discernment. The first movement includes a few recommended steps for engaging the Lectio Divina underneath the passage from Psalms. May they be a blessing as you navigate the needs of your campuses.

A Lectio for Guidance
Psalm 32:8-11 (NIV)

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
    I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
Do not be like the horse or the mule,
    which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle
    or they will not come to you.
Many are the woes of the wicked,
    but the Lord’s unfailing love
    surrounds the one who trusts in him.

Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you righteous;
    sing, all you who are upright in heart!

Recommended steps:
1) Take a minute to quiet yourself and clear your thoughts.
2) Read through the passage, slowly. Pay attention to any images, phrases, or words that stand out.
3) Re-read the passage, focusing on the parts of the passage that stood out before.
4) Pause and take a moment to reflect: why do those images or words stand out?
5) Read the passage one last time, then take a moment to gather your thoughts.
6) Take time to reflect on the reading:

  • How do those key images or words speak to you in your current situation?
  • What do they remind you about God, yourself, and/or those around you?

A Prayer of Discernment

Lord, you are the source of all wisdom and truth. You are the good Father who never turns away his children. You love me enough to listen and walk with me through the dilemmas of life, great or small.  Even now as I come to you for guidance, stir in me the joy of knowing your unchanging grace towards me.

Bring clarity as I sift through the needs, barriers, and opportunities of this situation.

Help me to speak and act with your love towards colleagues and students.

Grant me wisdom to know when I should speak out and when to refrain from speaking.

Call to mind those who I may have overlooked.

Help me to see how I can foster peace in areas of conflict.

Give me ears to hear the concerns and insights of those around me.

Illumine the path that will best serve the needs of campus.

Bring tranquility where there is anxiety and uncertainty.

Help me to steward well the resources and authority with which I’ve been entrusted.

Guide me to decisions that reflect your goodness and glorify you.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, amen.
