Transformed From Fear to Joy

Lynn, a senior at the University of California at Los Angeles, decided to live in a dormitory. She believed that God had called her to give up the freedom of living off-campus for the sake of the younger students she could mentor. She writes of the experience:

I had never anticipated so much from my decision to return to the dorms as a senior at UCLA. In my last year here in college, I felt God leading me to invest in the underclassmen, especially in the area of evangelism. I have never been the most skilled or excited when it came to evangelism, but I did have the conviction to obey Jesus’ words.

Truthfully, I was terrified of possible rejection and a fruitless year. However, over the course of the first ten weeks of school, I realized that Jesus works beyond my efforts and abilities when it comes to revealing himself to the lost. Much to my surprise, twelve people from my floor came out to the first Bible study that I held specifically for non-Christians.

Though I was incredibly nervous and sped through the study, I found a new level of trust and vulnerability with these seeking freshmen. Over the rest of the quarter, I saw new faces with a refreshing interest in understanding Christianity and Jesus. Each day I watched my relationships progress in depth and trust with the people in my dorm.

In my last study, I had an atheist, a Hindu, and a Jewish man prompting me to study the Word with them, which led to an incredible conversation about God’s existence. Though there have been hard costs to pay, I have witnessed the ways God is moving in this small community of people and have had the privilege of sharing in his work.
